When you think about Irish food, what comes to mind? Sure there’s corned beef and cabbage or colcannon, but can you really think of anything else? Yes, the classics are always great but during the holidays, I always like to bring an element that’s different or new to the table. And with a long history and a rich culture, Irish cuisine is full of interesting and unique recipes to try! We’re here to show you what else lies beyond corned beef and cabbage. Here are five Irish recipes you probably haven’t encountered.
Irish Chicken Farmhouse Soup
A warm cup of soup on a cold winter’s day is just what we need to fend off winter’s chill. This soup would be easy to make with a store-bought broth, but when the snow has us trapped inside, we can conquer our cabin fever by making a homemade broth, and it makes all the difference. We stumbled upon this recipe a few years back and it quickly became one of our family favorites. It’s the soup we love the make when we’re feeling under the weather, or when we just want a meal that will fill our bellies with goodness.
5-Ingredient Irish Jambons
There’s no question that in the mornings it can be hectic to get everyone fed and dressed for the day. But, if there’s a tasty grab-and-go option around it makes things a whole lot easier (and more delicious). Enter the Irish jambon, an easy-to-make pastry filled with ham and cheese that’s become a staple food across the Emerald Isle.
Traditional Irish Boxty
Of all the Irish recipes that get passed around online, these boxty stand far and above some of the less traditional ones (green cupcakes, I’m looking at you). But, boxty is such a staple in Irish cooking that there are several rhymes about it! Ones goes, “Boxty on the griddle; boxty on the pan. If you can’t make boxty, you’ll never get a man”. But, some variations say that if you don’t eat boxty you’ll never land a man. Either way, these tasty potato pancakes are a fun way to enjoy Irish cuisine.
Irish Apple Cake
While most countries have their own spin on a delicious apple confection, Ireland is most known for its Kerry Apple Cake (also known as Irish Apple Cake). It might be a little closer to an apple bread, but it’s got the perfect touch of sweetness running through the batter, plus a sprinkling of sugar on top before it bakes in the oven gives it a gorgeous (and delicious) crackled top that ties everything together. Not only that, but there’s also a silky smooth custard sauce that gets drizzled over the top…perfection, we tell you.
Irish Potato Candy
You might be looking at this and thinking Is that a potato or a candy? It’s the latter! I can assure you that although these sure look like tiny tubers, they most definitely are a sweet treat – a sweet and creamy coconut studded treat that’s kissed with cinnamon, in fact. There’s nary a potato here but the illusion is all part of the fun of these cute (and easy to make) candies.
