Wally Bites are the kind of sweet snack that fit right in with fall baking and holiday treat-making. They’re simple enough to whip up on a quiet afternoon but look nice enough to add to a holiday dessert tray or package up as a homemade gift. If you’re looking for something a little different from the usual cookies and fudge, these chocolate-covered nuts are the perfect thing.

The walnuts get a quick cook in maple syrup, which gives them a lightly sweet coating and helps bring out their natural flavor. A little salt balances the sweetness, and once the walnuts cool, they’re ready for their chocolate coating. It’s a simple process that gives each bite plenty of flavor without requiring much time at the stove.

Once the walnuts are coated in melted semi-sweet chocolate, a dusting of cocoa powder gives them their finished look. They have the perfect combination of crunchy nuts and smooth chocolate!

Let them cool completely before storing them in an airtight container, and they’ll be ready whenever you need a little something sweet. Serve them alongside other homemade candies, set them out for guests, or tuck them into small bags or tins for a simple edible gift.

Wally Bites
Allergens: Nuts
Diet: Gluten-Free
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole walnuts
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- ⅓ cup cocoa powder, for dusting
Preparation
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add walnuts and drizzle maple syrup over top and sprinkle on salt. Stirring constantly, cook until syrup is sticky, about 2-4 minutes. Transfer walnuts to a sheet of parchment paper and separate to cool.
- Place the chopped chocolate in a medium-sized microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until fully melted.
- Add the cooled walnuts to the melted chocolate and stir until they’re evenly coated. Using two forks, transfer walnuts back to the parchment.
- Allow walnuts to cool for 3-4 minutes, then dust with cocoa powder (I like to use a mesh strainer for this). Flip and dust the bottom as well, then allow to fully cool.
- Store in an airtight container.
