Old-Fashioned Baked Beans are one of those timeless side dishes that never seem to go out of style. Whether they’re served at a summer barbecue, holiday potluck, or Sunday family dinner, a big pan of baked beans always finds a way to disappear. This version keeps things simple by starting with canned beans, then dressing them up with a sweet and tangy sauce, smoky bacon, and plenty of onion for a dish that tastes like it’s been cooking all day.

Using canned beans keeps this recipe wonderfully simple without sacrificing that slow-cooked taste. Pork and beans provide a flavorful base, while white beans, kidney beans, and green beans add plenty of texture and color. Everything gets mixed together in one bowl before heading to the oven, where the flavors have time to meld into something that tastes like it’s been cooking all day.

Brown sugar caramelizes as the beans bake, while the bacon adds savory richness and the mustard powder gives the sauce just enough zip. Baking uncovered for the final few minutes thickens the sauce and creates those irresistible caramelized edges everyone loves to scoop onto their plate.

Whether you’re serving burgers or holiday ham, these Old-Fashioned Baked Beans fit right in. They’re easy enough for a weeknight dinner but special enough for family celebrations. One bite is enough to remind you why this timeless recipe has been passed from one generation to the next.
Old-Fashioned Baked Beans
Ingredients
- 1 (28 oz) can pork & beans
- 1 (15 oz) can white or butter beans, drained
- 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained
- 1 (15 oz) can green beans, drained
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 8 slices bacon, cooked and roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon mustard powder
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix until well combined. Do not drain the pork and beans!
- Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake for 15-20 additional minutes. If your baking dish is very full you may want to place a cookie sheet until the pan in case of spillage.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
