Some recipes just seem to show up in every community cookbook, and Revel Bars are one of those classics. They’re the kind of treat you’ll find tucked between casseroles, church supper favorites, and handwritten family recipes. With their chewy oat base and rich chocolate center, it’s easy to see why these bars have been passed around for years.

The oatmeal mixture comes together with brown sugar, butter, eggs, and vanilla, giving the bars a soft, chewy texture and plenty of flavor. Part of it is pressed into the bottom of the pan to create the base, while the rest is saved for the topping. It’s a simple way to get a little bit of crunch and chew in every bite.

The middle is where things get especially good. Sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, butter, and a little salt are cooked together until smooth, then finished with chopped walnuts and vanilla. The fudge layer gets spread over the oat base before the remaining dough is scattered over the top.

After about 45 minutes in the oven, the bars come out golden around the edges with that rich chocolate layer peeking through. Let them cool completely before slicing so the fudge has time to set. Revel Bars are easy to make, easy to share, and exactly the sort of dependable dessert that earns a permanent spot in your recipe collection!

Classic Revel Bars
Ingredients
- 3 cups 1-minute oats
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 cups brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup butter, room temperature
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
Fudge
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, sift together oats, flour, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, combine butter and brown sugar and mix until light and airy. Add eggs and vanilla and mix until smooth, then add dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- For the fudge: Add condensed milk, chocolate chips, butter, and salt to a small saucepan over low heat. Stir often, cook for 5-7 minutes or until smooth. Remove pan from heat and mix in walnuts and vanilla.
- Press about 2/3 of the oatmeal mixture into a crust layer in the bottom of the prepared pan. Spoon fudge overtop and spread into an even layer. Sprinkle clumps of the remaining oat mixture over the fudge.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden. Allow bars to fully cool before cutting for the cleanest slices. Enjoy!
