The best news about Beach Dip is that you don’t need a beach to enjoy it. It gets its name because of its easy, no-fuss, crowd-pleasing spirit — the kind that belongs on a beach blanket, at a backyard cookout, or anywhere a bag of ruffled chips and good company are involved. Creamy, savory, loaded with onion flavor and a shower of crispy French fried onions on top, this is the kind of dip that’s exactly what you want it to be. (And the kind that has everyone hovering around the bowl.) Five minutes, no cooking, and made up mostly of pantry staples, it’s a go-to summer crowd-pleaser.

What Ingredients Do You Need for Beach Dip?

Short list, big flavor. You’ll need:

  • Sour cream.
  • Mayonnaise.
  • Minced dried onions.
  • Onion powder and garlic powder.
  • Dried parsley.
  • Worcestershire sauce. (Just a touch, but it adds a deep savory note that makes everything taste better!)
  • Fresh chives.
  • Salt.
  • And French fried onions for topping. (The crunchy, salty finishing touch that makes this dip completely irresistible!)

For serving, I always like a bag of ruffled potato chips. Their sturdy ridges make them perfect for dipping and not breaking.

Why both dried onions and onion powder?
They do different things! The dried minced onions rehydrate slightly as the dip chills and add little pops of onion texture throughout, while the onion powder works into the base and gives the whole dip a deep, rounded onion flavor from the ground up. Together they’re what give this dip that craveable onion dip taste.

How Do You Make Beach Dip?

This is about as easy as it gets; you stir everything together in a bowl and you’re done. The only real instruction here is to chill it before serving so the flavors have a chance to come together, and to add the fried onions on top right before it hits the table so they stay perfectly crispy.

But just in case, here’s how you do it:
Stir together the sour cream, mayo, dried onions, onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, fresh chives, and a pinch of salt until well combined. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve — even 30 minutes in the fridge makes a noticeable difference as the dried onions soften and the flavors meld together. Right before serving, pile the French fried onions generously on top, set out the ruffled chips, and watch it vanish!
