When you need cookies at lightning speed and don’t want to go to the store, baking is generally a troublesome game of pulling out the cookbook and reading through the recipe — all of which slows down the entire process. With limited time, most baking is a hard pass. What if there was a recipe that you could remember in no time flat? Well, the internet has answers for you with a vintage recipe you’re bound to make. And remake. Again. And again.

The thing that throws people off with baking is the list of ingredients. Cups of this, spoonfuls of that, but in the depths of Reddit, someone posted an easy cookie recipe that only uses basic measurements — butter brittle cookies.

This Reddit user remembered making these cookies as a child but was horrified to hear that their mother threw the book out. With only a spartan amount of information, they scoured second-hand marketplaces to find a cookbook with a cover they remembered. Luckily the user was able to snatch another copy and purchased it.

In the dessert section, the recipe for butter brittle cookies doesn’t even have a full page, that’s how short the recipe is. Now you may be thinking, butter brittle sounds like hard candy, but the name is very deceiving. Still not convinced? Let the ease of the recipe open you up to baking them!

It’s one cup of white and brown sugar, one cup of melted butter, and one beaten egg. Then it shifts to two cups of flour and two teaspoons of baking soda, all followed by a pinch of salt. Mixed all together rolled, and smashed down with a fork, these cookies bake up in 15 minutes. What’s even better? No resting or freezing is required.

One user commented that with their cross-hacked design and puffy appearance these cookies mirror peanut butter cookies. The cookies have the best of both crunchy and soft worlds. The edges are a bit crispy, but the center is delightfully chewy and delicate.

Try them out, they won’t disappoint.
