If you grew up in the south then you’re probably already familiar with this recipe. This Southern Pea Salad is one of those classic dishes that shows up at every family reunion, church potluck, and summertime cookout. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s creamy, salty, and guaranteed to have everyone going back for a second helping. Made with simple ingredients (and that bag of peas you have in the back of your freezer!), it’s a dish you’ll turn to again and again because it’s so comforting and downright delicious.

The core of this dish is frozen sweet peas. You’ll want to set them up ahead of time to thaw or place them in a microwave-safe dish and heat them for a minute or two to defrost them. We don’t want them hot, just room temp. Mix in some cubed ham, crumbled bacon, and a hefty cupful of shredded cheddar cheese, then it’s time for the dressing. Here we’re working with a blend of mayo and sour cream, well seasoned with garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and just a dash of cayenne for a hint of spice.

It’s cool and creamy with a subtle kick that keeps you coming back for more. Once everything is stirred together, all this salad needs is an hour to chill in the fridge so those flavors can really mingle. Whether you’re hosting Sunday dinner, packing a picnic, or just need something easy and satisfying for the week ahead, this Southern Pea Salad has you covered!
