Peanut Butter Banana Dusty Road Sundaes

When the weather heats up, there’s nothing like a good old fashioned sundae. There’s something so satisfying about the chocolate sauce and ice cream together, and it’s even better if there are bananas on top. But, there’s one ingredient we hardly ever see on sundaes anymore and we think it’s time to bring it back. The secret ingredient is malted milk powder and it’s a taste that brings back childhood memories.

A few small drive-ins and ice cream stores here and there still serve what are known as “dusty road sundaes” topped with this sweet powder, hence the reference to dust in the name. It’s not something you find at larger ice cream chains because the industry changed a lot over the years. We’ve moved away from some of the old fashioned flavors, but you can easily replicate this nostalgic treat at home.

Malted milk powder may sound like a specialty ingredient, but it’s actually available in the baking aisle of most grocery stores. It’s just that most people don’t know it’s there.

To make this treat, you’ll need to heat up some chocolate sauce for 20 or 30 seconds in the microwave. Sauce is preferable to syrup since it’s thicker and usually has more flavor.

Next you coat the inside of 4 bowls or sundae glasses with the chocolate and then divvy up a pint of ice between the 4 servings. You can use whichever kind you like best, but we have to say that a peanut butter ice cream is by far the best.

Something like like Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Half Baked Ice Cream or Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream from Häagen-Dazs would work well here. If you can find plain peanut butter ice cream then that works great, too. And, if peanut butter isn’t your thing then any other ice you enjoy would be amazing.

Next you slice the bananas up and place them around the top of the bowls. Drizzle some more chocolate sauce on top and then sprinkle with the malted milk powder “dust” as the final step.
