Two-Year-Old Saves Family From House Fire

It isn’t every day that a toddler becomes a hero, but that is exactly what happened on the 15th of January this year. Brandon Dahl might only be two-years-old, but that night he managed to save his entire family from a fire.

Kayla and her husband, Nathan, were fast asleep and unable to smell the fire’s smoke due to having lost their sense of smell because of Covid. However, Brandon, who had woken up, could feel the fire’s heat, and so he began repeating over and over, “Mama, hot.”

Eventually, Kayla woke up. At first, she assumed that Brandon was warm and wanted her to remove a few blankets from his bed. But as she went over, she quickly realized what was happening when she saw the flames. The mother recalled in the video below, “I just saw the flames coming out of the living room and into our bedroom.”

Kayla then woke up Nathan by yelling “Fire, fire, fire!” At first, Nathan assumed that since he was a volunteer firefighter, she was waking him to go put out a fire at work. But then he too saw the flames, and quickly realized it was his own house that was on fire and needed to be put out.

Remembering the events of the night, Nathan stated, “I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ My heart just dropped. In my head, I already knew this house was gone. We had to get out.”

Due to his position as a volunteer firefighter, Nathan had often prepped his kids as to what they should do in the event of a fire. The family had also practiced fire drills together, so once the couple was able to wake their other four kids, the entire family managed to evacuate from their home in less than a minute. And thankfully, that efficiency helped save their lives.

Sadly, the Dahl family lost everything in the house fire. However, their local community came together to rally behind them and assist them in starting over. A friend of Kayla’s set up a GoFundMe for the family in order to raise donations for the family. The community also took up a collection for the family to give them items they needed like clothes and toys, as well as furniture.

Following the fire, the Dahls went to temporarily stay with Kayla’s grandparents as they live close by. Since then, they’ve managed to rent a home where they’ll be staying during the process of rebuilding. All the outpouring of support shown by the community has been overwhelming for the family, with Kayla saying, “We are very, very, very grateful for everybody and everything.”

But more than anything, both Kayla and Nathan are eternally grateful that Brandon was able to wake them in time to escape from the home unharmed.

The mom said, “Brandon definitely had a guardian angel help him get out of that living room. It’s honestly nothing short of a miracle. An absolute miracle. I definitely have a different outlook on life now. It’s made me appreciate and better understand what matters most.”
