Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But it can also be the most fun meal of the day – especially if you make it a brunch.

Oftentimes, the fancy stars of brunch or breakfast are pancakes or waffles. These sweet breakfast dishes are quite easy to make at home, especially if you have the right mix. Many of us probably have some kind of pancake or waffle mix in our pantry ready to go for the next time we’re in the mood for a relaxed breakfast. However, there has been some recent news that might make you think twice about what is in your cupboard.

If you have recently bought the Great Value Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix from Walmart, you might want to check the box as there has been a recall. Continental Mills has issued a recall for only one single batch of the pancake and waffle mix, and the recalled item consists of the following: the UPC 078742370828, lot code KX2063, and best by date of 09/01/2023. The mix has been distributed to Walmart stores nationwide, therefore it is important to check your box of the mix just to be safe.

As it turns out, the recall is because of contamination of potential cable fragments. The cable was used to clear the processing line during the packaging of the mix, however, there were cable fragments discovered in a small amount of the product, therefore the recall was issued out of safety. Fortunately, so far there have been no reports of contaminated products or injuries.

The Continental Mills company issued a press release which read: “Food Safety is the highest priority for Continental Mills and the company is acting swiftly for the safety of consumers. Continental Mills is working with the FDA and retailers to ensure any affected product is removed from the marketplace immediately.”

Should you happen to have a box of the recalled mix within your possession, the FDA has recommended either disposing of it, or returning it to the Walmart where it was purchased in order to receive a full refund or, alternatively, exchange it for a different product.
