German Chocolate Cake is easy to love, what with its contrast of chocolate and signature buttery, sweet, crunchy, coconutty frosting. When you hear the name, you can close your eyes and almost taste it – because there’s no other combo quite like it. This easy fudge borrows that flavor combo, and it does it well, but in a creamier, more concentrated way.

This isn’t a microwave fudge, but it’s still very simple to make. The basic process is that you boil some evaporated milk and sugar and pour it over some chocolate chips and butter until everything has melted. We use two kinds of chocolate chips here, both semi-sweet and milk chocolate, so that the fudge is sweet but not cloying.

That melted mixture gets beaten with an electric mixer for a bit, to keep the fudge from tasting too dense. It ends up with a nice light, creamy texture that melts on the tongue.

The topping is pretty much the same frosting you’d find on any German Chocolate Cake – thick with plenty of coconut and walnuts (or pecans) folded into a sweet and buttery mixture. Just like with the cake, that frosting goes perfectly with the chocolate it tops… but here you only need a couple of squares – this stuff is rich!
