Many of us have been playing with Barbie’s since we were little children. Every once in a while, Mattel will add something new to the collection, like their new doll inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou.
The Barbie website talks about the series, known as “The Inspiring Women Series.” It discusses courageous women who have stood up and made their mark on society, helping women for generations in the process.
Dr. Maya Angelou is well known on a number of levels. Not only was she an accomplished poet and dancer, but she was also an author, actress, and civil rights activist. Perhaps her most known work is the memoir from 1969, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” As an African-American woman, she was the first to have a nonfiction bestseller.
Over the years, Angelou has also made some headway in her career, including winning two NAACP image awards for nonfiction outstanding literary work. Biography.com says that she won those awards in 2005 and 2009.
According to the Barbie website, “Maya Angelou Barbie® doll is being presented to honor the history and impact of Dr. Maya Angelou’s activism, work and achievements. Sculpted to her likeness and dressed in a head wrap and dress with floral print, Maya Angelou Barbie® doll features a curvy body and articulation for endless posing possibilities.”
You can purchase the doll through the Barbie website for $29.99.SKM: below-content placeholder
