If you grew up on the west coast you might be familiar with this vintage cookie recipe! Billie Goats have been a favorite in home kitchens since the 1930s. Made with chopped walnuts, dates, and sometimes chocolate, they’re loaded with flavor in every bite. Just where the name comes from, no one knows, but their lumpy appearance might have something to do with it. One taste and you’ll see why the recipe is still a favorite after all these years.

The base of this recipe starts with butter and sugar creamed together until smooth, then mixed with eggs, vanilla, and a bit of sour cream. That sour cream might sound unusual, but it’s the secret to keeping these cookies soft and tender. It adds moisture without making the dough heavy, which is exactly what you want when working with lots of mix-ins like dates and nuts.

What really defines Billy Goat Cookies is the spice blend and add-ins. Cinnamon, allspice, and cloves give the dough a deep, cozy flavor, while chopped dates bring natural sweetness and a slightly chewy texture. Walnuts add crunch and balance, and if you decide to include chocolate chunks, they melt into little pockets of richness throughout the cookie.

Once baked, these cookies come out lightly golden and sturdy enough to hold their shape, but still soft inside. They cool beautifully and store well in an airtight container, which makes them great for baking ahead. Whether you grew up with a recipe like this or you’re discovering it for the first time, Billy Goat Cookies are a comforting reminder of how good old-school baking can be!
