Butter is a baking essential, so when you’re unexpectedly out of it, things start to look a little bleak. Good thing we have a few options for butter substitutions! Salted Butter Substitutions: 1 cup butter = 1 cup margarine or 1 cup vegatable shortening + 1/2 teaspoon salt or 7/8 cup of lard + 1/2 teaspoon salt. Unsalted Butter Substitutions: 1 cup butter = 1 cup vegatable shortening or 7/8 cup lard.
