Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Whether you know this snack as puppy chow, muddy buddies, or monkey munch, we can all agree it’s absolutely delicious and the perfect snack to indulge in. Typically consisting of Chex cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar, puppy chow is a popular, if not a bit messy, sweet treat. While I’ll always love the original recipe, we’ve found several other versions during our years here at 12 Tomatoes. I’m here to share our top 5 favorite puppy chow recipes! Try one out this weekend!

Strawberry Shortcake Puppy Chow

The creamy white chocolate base is the perfect supporting actor for the star of the show: the freeze-dried strawberries. Alongside the crunch of the Chex cereal it’s a winning combination and one that doesn’t rely on peanut butter or milk chocolate. Get the recipe here!

Lemonade Puppy Chow

I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff. It’s sweet (but not in an overpowering way) and crunchy in that way that makes it hard to walk away from, but it also has a refreshing light and bright flavor, just like lemonade. It’s like a little snack of sunshine! Get the recipe here!

Puppy Chow Bars

We needed a bake sale treat and we needed one fast! Of course, we could fall back on the old standby recipe for Rice Krispy treats, but we couldn’t resist whipping up a batch of these peanut-buttery chocolate bars with the most adorable little name. Puppy Chow bars came to the rescue and we couldn’t be more pleased with how these turned out. Get the recipe here!

Snickerdoodle Puppy Chow

Instead of chocolate and peanut butter as the main flavors, we used the same cinnamon sugar dusting on top of snickerdoodle cookies as our guiding star for this snack. You still need a binding agent – thank you, white chocolate chips – and then it’s just a matter of perfecting the ratio of cinnamon to sugar in order to strike the perfect snickerdoodle-flavored balance. Chocolate Peanut Butter Puppy Chow

These chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar-covered morsels are the easiest and tastiest thing you’ll make this year! We discovered them in college – and were stunned by all the different ways you can make them – and now they’re one of our go-tos during the year whenever we need something we know people will love and devour. At the core of this treat are corn chex, melted chocolate, peanut butter and powdered sugar. Combine everything together in a large plastic bag, shake it all up and you’re good to go!
