Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

The videos that we come across on TikTok will sometimes leave us with more questions than they answer. This clip is chief among them. Just wait until you see what this woman is dealing with every single time that she goes grocery shopping!

Emily (also known as emilyinalaska_ on TikTok) is here to show you how difficult life can be for those who shop in rural areas of Alaska.

As you would expect, shopping in Alaska is much more challenging than it would be in most other places. Emily is spending $18 on some milk, $9 on some Doritos and heaven only knows what she is spending on actual meals of food.

The clip has already gotten over 2 million views, inspiring a sizable amount of discussion on why prices are so harsh in this location.

Alaska has long been a source of fascination on social media and TikTok is no different. Users have gone viral for showing off any number of aspects of this state, including an “abandoned” McDonald’s that seems to exist in the middle of the wilderness. Nothing could prepare us for Emily’s video, though. It definitely hit us right where we live and that’s our pocketbook.

The clip was recorded at the grocery store so that people could that Emily was being as truthful as possible. She does not specify where the video was taken but she is quick to mention that she is not located in one of the state’s major cities. Emily is forced to pay a premium for all sorts of everyday goods that we all take for granted, such as coffee creamer, cheese, and canned salsa.

It doesn’t a rocket scientist to figure out what the issue is here. If the food has to travel much, much farther to reach a rural location, the prices are going to rise. Small towns have been dealing with this problem for some time now, which causes a sizable amount of contention.

Even after they received this explanation, the comment section was still very upset by what they saw. They feel bad for Emily and all those who are stuck paying these awful prices.

There were also native Alaska residents who were more than happy to see her calling attention to the ridiculousness. “Thank you for posting!” one local resident wrote. “People don’t realize how expensive prices are here in rural Alaska.” Check out the TikTok below:
