If you’re over a certain age, you probably remember navigating to new places much different than you do today. These days, getting to a new destination is as easy as it’s ever been – you simply get into your car, enter the destination on your phone, and let a little automated voice guide your way.

You don’t even need a separate dedicated navigation device anymore – it’s all available at your fingertips on your phone.

Younger generations will never know the struggle of having to give yourself enough time to look up your destination on MapQuest, print out the directions, have a mini anxiety attack when the print happens to run out of ink, then scramble to find a piece of paper and a pen to scribble down the directions only to later be unable to decipher your own writing as you try to find where you’re going.

That was my generation. According to my parents, back in their day, you either successfully read a map or just got lost.

Technology has brought us quite far. But it can only do so much. It can still cause problems in its own way. In a wild twist, one woman in Portland, Maine was involved in a car crash that she claims was caused because she was simply following her GPS. The crash happened to occur after she drove down a literal staircase!

While she claimed that the cause of the crash was because of her GPS’s directions, the Portland Police Department was skeptical. According to the department’s Facebook post, officers believe that the real cause of the crash was due to the fact that the 26-year-old woman driving crashed due to her “excessive blood alcohol level.”

The woman was driving a Toyota Highlander SUV. Her accident involved not only driving down stairs, but driving across a pedestrian plaza and crashing through the police department’s garage! There was a bit of property damage, but luckily, no one was physically injured in the crash. The situation definitely could’ve ended much more grimly.

The Portland Police Department shared in their post, “We are fortunate that she didn’t strike anyone and this ended with just a small amount of property damage. Please don’t drink and drive.”

Afterwards, the woman was cited a summons for supposedly operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
