Have you ever wondered why kitchen windows are almost aways above the sink? The titular question is asked by a wide range of homeowners but now, we are finally getting a concrete answer.
One woman decided that she had to know and she took to Reddit for additional information. She wanted to know whether she should move her sink away from the window. The answers that she got on the matter were illuminating, to say the least.

Many have started to question the wisdom of placing a kitchen window this close to the sink in the first place. It’s one of those things that you never seem to think about until someone else starts to bring it up. That’s what makes this story such a funny one. We have had an absolute ball following this story and we are sure that you will, too.
“Planning a kitchen renovation, and realised we can easily move the kitchen sink away from the window to give us more usable counter space,” they wrote on Reddit. “Then I realised, I’ve never seen a kitchen sink that isn’t in front of a window. Is there a reason for that? Is staring out of the window while washing up just a British thing? Or am I crazy in even suggesting a sink with no window?”

We humbly submit that it is not, in fact, just a British thing. In fact, we catch ourselves doing this far more often than most would expect. KDUCK, a kitchen design website, is here to explain:
“The simple reason why kitchen sinks have traditionally been placed under the window is that the window is, obviously, on an outside wall.
In terms of plumbing, using as short a waste pipe as possible from the sink to the drains is not only the most effective but also the cheapest, solution.”

That makes all of the sense in the world and now we have learned something new. “Makes perfect sense. Thankfully, the opposite end of the kitchen also has drains and plumbing, just no windows,” the original poster responded.
That’s the beauty of the internet sometimes. You can ask a very reasonable question and receive some very reasonable answers. Thanks to this Reddit user, we now know more about our kitchen layout than we ever could have expected.
