An Untraditional Way To Cut Onions Into The Perfect Size For Tex-Mex Recipes

Onions are a finicky thing. If cooked in a soup, stew, or sauce, uniformity isn’t a requirement, as the cooking process wilts and dissolves the onions’ cell walls to a degree. Yet in things like salsas, salads, and guacamole, large, uneven chunks are immediately noticed. When eating these sorts of dishes, the last thing we want to bite down on is a giant, overpowering wedge of raw onion. While there’s always the traditional way to cut onions, there’s another way to get a nice even dice as well.

Here TikTok user kitchenruby takes chopping an onion and turns it on its side, literally.

First, slice the onion into large disks.

Next, cut each disk in half.

Place one half of the onion on top of the other half. Repeat this process with the remaining onion.

Starting from one end of the onion, cut the onion into even half-inch dices.

With this method, you’re not dealing with the slippery instability that comes with traditional cutting. The slice and arch of the onion are laid flat, creating more stability. Seeing the rings of the onion makes it easy to see how much you’re cutting with each dice.
