The School of Life wanted to know why people tend to regress to more childish behaviors when they have found themselves in pressurized adult situations.

On the one hand, it makes perfect sense to us, and on the other hand, it does not. That’s why we are glad that The School of Life is taking a closer look at the situation.

There are specific reasons why people regress to certain behaviors. When we fail to act our age, it is actually related to a defense mechanism that we rely upon during traumatic childhood events.

In their video, The School of Life explains: “When there is a certain kind of crisis, we should notice how fast we fall through the floors of adulthood, ten or twenty or forty years/stories below the present, to the child-like basement.

For starters, the video suggests that we look inward and find ways to care for our inner child. This will allow us to address adult situations more easily. That is not all that the good folks at The School of Life had to say on this one. It was a great deal of fun learning more and we are definitely going to be applying the lessons from this video going forward.

“We’re so afraid of patronizing ourselves, we can find it hard to accept the bewildering way in which, in certain areas, we truly can be slammed back into being a frightened, panicky, perspective-less young version of ourselves,” the video explains.

It continues, “Only by accepting the risk can we start to notice the damage in us and the traumatized responses we are still leaning on, and then put in place more appropriate and more self-protective measures.”
