You would be forgiven for scoffing at this hack. After all who really needs help with using their washing machine? It’s not like this is all that complicated.

However, this cleaning expert is here to make sure that your washing machine remains in peak condition. Irish TikTok star Laura de Barra is here to change the game and we are always grateful for any tips and pointers that we can get.

She has risen to prominence on the popular app because of her willingness to share her awesome advice. Now, it is time for our readers to find out more about one of her best hacks yet. Her advice is related to the tiny drawer that is used every time we wash our clothes. This is the drawer that the laundry detergent is placed inside of before each load is washed.

“You might be wondering why your dispenser drawer is hanging on to fabric softener and not using the full amount you put in every wash,” said Laura. Once she is ready to show us the source of the problem, the drawer is removed.

The inside of these appliances is actually covered in spray holes. Water is pumped into the drawer so that the contents can be flushed into the drum.

When we do not clean this area regularly, the machine will not function as well. That’s because the holes are blocked with leftover power, limescale or mold. The fabric softener and detergent are not washed away as easily in these instances.

“If you’re finding one section isn’t getting picked up fully during a cycle, it probably means that the spray holes are clogged,” Laura explains.

“It’s nearly always the fabric softener section,” she continued. To avoid these issues, we are told that we need to be cleaning our washing machine on a regular basis. Take a closer look at the instructions provided for the appliance. From there, remove the dispenser drawer from your machine and examine the holes on the roof of the washer.

Give these holes a gentle scrub. Laura recommends using dental brushes. “Dental brushes are fab because they’re small enough to fit into spray holes like this. The bristles are soft enough for your gums so are not going to damage the machine,” she says.
