They also tend to work along with each other nicely, because you can grow one on the east side of the trellis and the other one on the west side. One type of bean will shade the other that tends to be more sensitive to the summer sun.
Carrots and Root Vegetables
There are plenty of root vegetables that you can grow during this time of year, including carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes. Preparing the soil is one of the most important things to consider for this type of root vegetable gardening. If you have too many rocks, roots, or other barriers, they may not grow properly.
Okra
If you’re looking for a plant that loves the heat of the summer, okra is your choice. It does well in the drought-type weather and you can plant it a few months before the frost to have something delicious on the table in the autumn.
Leafy Greens
Since leaf lettuce and other greens, including cabbage and spinach, love the cooler days of the autumn, planting them at the end of July through the beginning of September is a good idea. They are nutritious and can make a great salad.
Cucumbers and Squash
Squash, melons, and other cucurbits love the warmer weather. They tend to enjoy a longer growing season so they are best planted early in the spring. There are others, however, such as summer squash that will grow much quicker and can be planted later in the year. This includes planting a pumpkin patch, which can be started at the end of July.
Broccoli and Cauliflower
Cruciferous vegetables can be planted in the middle of the summer and you will enjoy a wonderful fall crop. In fact, you can start them indoors in early July, but you can also start putting them outside at the beginning of August. Just make sure that you aren’t expecting any frost before November.
