Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

This story takes place at Oak Hill Elementary school near Atlanta. These students knew that their custodian, who hails from Ukraine, would be going through some difficult emotions given all that’s going on.

Lana Gashenko has been working at the school for over 20 years but she never could have expected all of this. These students and their show of support are enough to touch anyone’s heart, though.

They put up a blue and yellow Ukrainian flag. It was also adorned with a very special message: “We love you, Ms. Lana.” The students were not done there, either.

The special touches that they added made the flag truly special. In addition to the personalized message, they also added some sunflowers, which are a symbol of hope for the nation of Ukraine.

They even added the names of some of her family members. Once Lana had the chance to see what these children had done for her, she was reduced to tears.

Lana is a United States citizen but she still has a number of family members who are residing in Ukraine. We cannot begin to imagine how she feels on an everyday basis. It has to be so hard to come to work every day and do your job, knowing that you have a wide range of friends and loved ones who are potentially caught in the crossfire.

In a world where we all have no shortage of concerns that need to be addressed, these children were able to step outside of themselves and consider Lana during these trying times. If we are being totally honest here, we were nearly moved to tears. It’s that touching!
