A super easy homemade steak seasoning adds a delicious kick of flavor to your steaks, and is brilliant for improving those inexpensive cuts or ground beef dishes that benefit from an infusion of herbs and spices. The key to a great steak seasoning is combining a host of complementary elements with one or two headliners, and then making it in a batch big enough to convince you to use it more often.

As a younger man I was totally against the concept of adding unnecessary flavors to steak, convinced that you didn’t need anything else but for a hot grill and the right technique to make any piece of meat taste appetizing. As I’ve gotten older, and my tastes have developed, I’ve realized that adding a flavorful rub can be the difference between enjoying a mediocre steak and a delicious one, no matter the price of the cut.

Garlic, thyme, celery salt, and onion powder provide a tasty savory base to work from. Smoky paprika brings a delightful smoky accent and pop of color that can be switched out for its sweeter or hotter cousins. All you need is to buff up these central elements with Kosher salt and pepper, and you’ll have enough awesome seasoning salt for as long as you need.

There are endless options for innovation from this base seasoning salt, it’s just a matter of adding the herbs and spices that you wish for individual use – to create specific flavors that make a hot and spicy, or ultra herbaceous steak seasoning.

This homemade steak seasoning is a tremendous cure-all for beef (and pork) dishes that are likely to underwhelm in their initial flavor. From a pinch to a punch, it comes in very handy for boosting the taste of grilled or baked meats!
