Have you ever played with magnets? It can be a lot of fun to hold them in your hand and watch how they attract and repel each other.

Aside from being a good hobby, there are also many useful purposes for a magnet as well. We find them in many of our pieces of electronic equipment, and they are great for holding things on a refrigerator.

Sometimes, magnets are a little larger than what we may find around our homes. That includes the magnet at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida.

The magnet at that facility has the distinction of being the strongest magnet in the world. This may make you wonder just how strong the magnet is.

According to Veritasium, if you compare this magnet with the Earth’s magnetic field, you will find that the magnet located in Tallahassee is more than 1 million times stronger. In other words, it’s a big magnet.

We can look at it another way as well. The rating on a refrigerator magnet is 0.01 Tesla. The Earth’s magnetic field comes in at 0.00005 Tesla.

The electromagnet has a magnetic field of 45 Tesla, so it’s incredibly powerful.

One person who knows about the power of the magnet is Derek Muller. He paid a visit to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory to see just how strong the magnet was.

While he was there, he took a video and gave us an explanation of how the magnet works. It is more than just using a superconductor. It has an electromagnet on the outside with an inner electromagnet made of wire.

It is the combination that gives it the possibility of being so strong. You can learn more in this video:
