All over the world, people are struggling mightily with skyrocketing housing costs and dwindling availability. This is not a uniquely American problem but that has not stopped Americans from coming up with potential solutions.

We are a creative country, that is for sure. As affordable housing becomes harder and harder to find, Americans are now building tiny houses and finding other ways to duck the rising costs.

Meanwhile, families are looking to provide their children with a chance to make it in the world without having to deal with these types of expenses. Take the family in this story for instance. They decided that they were going to do everything in their power to make things easier for their daughters. It all started when Matt and his partner decided that they were going to live together.

Unfortunately, the home did not offer enough space for each of their daughters to have a bedroom to call their own. That’s when they decided to come up with a very unique solution to the issue. They purchased shipping containers for each of them and placed them in the backyard. This allowed them to maintain a certain level of privacy while remaining at home.

The shipping containers offer each teen 340 square feet of space and were purchased from Alternative Living Spaces. The couple had to shell out $60,000 apiece.

The tiny homes provide all of the same rooms that you would have access to in a traditional setting. There is a living room, kitchenette, bathroom, a bedroom that is separate from the rest of the home, lots of storage built-in and plenty of closet space.

Ashley, one of their daughters, was able to reside in the space before she took off and went to college. Linda and Matt were then able to garner some extra income by renting out one of the spaces to one of their other daughter’s buddies. From there, they also realized that the homes could serve as the perfect place for their parents to live once Maddie goes away to college.
