Sticky Arroz con Coca-Cola (Rice and Coke)
This Colombian favorite melds sweet Coca-Cola with rice and raisins
Coke and rice is a popular Colombian side dish that’s simple yet packed full of sweetness. It’s delicious and interesting enough to enliven even the most basic family meal. While most coke and rice recipes are cooked on the stovetop, our Sticky Arroz con Coca-Cola is done in the rice cooker, making the process a lot quicker and easier.
Arroz con Coca-Cola cooked in a rice cooker tastes different from that done on the stovetop, even when using the exact same ingredients. It tastes sweeter and has a stickier texture because there’s no water used while the rice is cooking – just white rice, raisins, and stock powder cooked in coke. The liquid gets soaked up by the rice until it’s done. All you need to do is give it a good stir to fluff it up a bit before serving, either in a bowl to share or as individual portions.
Sticky rice and Coke is a great accompaniment for a variety of dishes. The sweetness contrasts really well with spicy dishes and stir-fries, while it can also brighten up simpler proteins, such as steaks, grilled chicken, or even pork. I like to use it when I’m trying to get the kids to try new, slightly ‘special’ ingredients.
If you’re looking for an easy but refreshingly bright and fun side dish to add to family meals or entertaining, I’d highly recommend Sticky Arroz con Coca Cola. It takes just 15-20 minutes from start to finish, it’s hard to make mistakes, and there’s next to no cleaning up! Get out your rice cooker and give it a try!
