Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

As with most material things in life the royal family has access to a lot of services that regular people don’t. If you’ve ever muddled your way through making a gingerbread house then you know how much simpler it would be if someone could just do it for you. Well the royals can and their chefs make it look so easy, but also very elegant. I just might be stealing some of these ideas for my next Christmastime creation.

Their professional chefs are on hand to make all manner of feasts for visits with dignitaries, balls, parties, and just for the family for smaller meals. And, the royal family shared how their chefs make gingerbread houses for Christmas on their YouTube page.

These are nothing like some of the slap dash gingerbread houses. Instead the creations they make rival something from an art exhibit. But, who doesn’t aspire to have their gingerbread house look at least a bit over the top?

To start with the gingerbread dough is made and then rolled out. A steel ruler is used to cut the dough in the shapes of the template pieces. Then a big batch of royal icing is whipped up which will be the decoration as well as the glue that holds the pieces together. Royal icing is known to set quickly and to set harder than other icings, which means it can serve a lot of functions for gingerbread house-making.

Melted sugar pieces are used for the house windows and pine trees are made from stacked meringues tinted with green coloring. A thick layer of royal icing is used for the base as snow and it’s also applied as the hanging icicles on the edge of the house roof.
