Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

I’m not someone who figures out math equations, but I can quickly solve life equations. Give me life and any shade of carpet, and I guarantee the result will be a stain. With this in mind, I realized I had to find some quick DIY stain-removing tricks, and I came across one that works.

It’s like alchemy — figuring out how to remove stains — especially those pesky pet stains, but there are two (three if you count water) ingredients that will lift not just new stains but old, set-in stains — powder stain remover and blue dish soap.

In the video here, she used a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap, but you will want to test that method on a small piece of carpet first. The peroxide will lift and lighten the color pigmentation of the carpet. You don’t want to lighten your entire carpet to match that ONE spot, so you need to be cautious. Carpets that are already white or a pretty dull shade of beige might be okay with hydrogen peroxide, but any shades like gray or brown will lift to a different color.

The recipe, if you can call it a recipe, is simple! Measure one cup of hot water, ½ scoop of the powder stain remover, and two tablespoons of the blue dish soap. If you can use hydrogen peroxide, you can swap out powder stain remover for half a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide.

With a vegetable scrub brush at hand and a towel, pour the solution onto the carpet stain and start scrubbing. You have to work fast! The spot will foam up with bubbles. Keep scrubbing, and use the towel to soak the suds. Gradually add some plain hot water on top of the suds, this will rinse out the solution from the carpet. Keep pressing the towel over the stain, as it will lift the dirt out of the carpet.

The spot will stay wet for a little bit. You can speed up the drying by pointing a fan near the now-cleaned spot. Try this out yourself and you’ll be surprised by the results!
