We all experience stress from time to time. Maybe more so this year than any other, stress is a normal part of our every day lives. But how do you calm yourself down? We definitely can’t carry around the stress. And there are certain coping methods that aren’t the healthiest.

Stress releases the hormone known as cortisol. This happens when you’re experiencing the fight or flight response to certain situations. Too much cortisol getting released into the body for prolonged periods of time can result in negative long-term health effects. So, how can you help your body regulate this? With a simple breathing technique known as 4-7-8.

Here are the steps to practice the calming technique:

Start off with a comfortable seating position and area. Preferably somewhere quiet where you can close your eyes.

Next, breathe in through your nose to the count of four. Then hold the breath for the count of seven. And finally, exhale through your mouth to the count of eight.

It’s so simple but so effective. And it comes with wonderful health benefits. Some of the benefits include decreased anxiety, better sleep, helping to manage food cravings, as well as helping to control certain emotions like anger.
