There are certain television shows that define generations, and one children’s show that has done so was Reading Rainbow.

LeVar Burton took the lead in helping a generation of children appreciate literature.

Although the show has been off the air for some 15 years, they are now updating the original and it will be out in 2022. It is known as Reading Rainbow Live and it is sure to inspire yet another generation of children.

If you are familiar with how the original show worked, you will recognize many of the features in the updated version. Children will be encouraged to read but there will be some updates to make it more relevant to this generation.

According to a press release: “Reading Rainbow Live’ will share the same core values and structure as the original ‘Reading Rainbow’ program. Using original music, dance parties, field trips, cultural explorations, investigations of the natural world — and, of course, the book of the day — each 25-minute episode of ‘Reading Rainbow Live’ will feature a different theme designed to engage and inform young viewers.”

Perhaps the most notable difference between the two shows will be the host. LeVar Burton hosted the original series from 1983 until 2006 on PBS. He will not be on the new show but rather, they will have a number of cohosts that are known as “The Rainbows” who will take their turn hosting the live event.

Amy Guglielmo, the creative director for Reading Rainbow Live, said they are going to have a culturally diverse cast so everyone can see a reflection of themselves on the screen. She went on to say that they wanted the children to identify with the host, and to provide an entirely unique experience for them.

The show is still being cast and candidates are being asked to apply to be part of the next rainbow.

Something else that will be new is the interactive nature of the live episodes. Children will be encouraged to engage, play games, and be featured on stage during each episode.

A variety of books will also be highlighted on each episode to provide children the opportunity to explore something different and unique.

Gugliemo spoke with CBS, saying: “We really want kids to see themselves in the books that we’re choosing, and we’re going to use diverse creators, authors, illustrators, [and] settings.”
