Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Most of us couldn’t imagine walking just a few miles to work, let alone having to hike 33 miles to get to our place of employment.

It seems as if that is what one man in Prineville, Oregon did, but his difficulty did not go unnoticed.

According to ABC News, after Eric Akers’ car broke down, he had to walk the 33 miles to work in Bend. Not only did he lack the transportation he needed, but he also didn’t have the money necessary to pay for someone else to drive him.

Although he tried his best to find a ride to work, he couldn’t find anyone that could take him.

As Central Oregon Daily reported, he said: “I needed to get to work no matter what. So I woke up early – about 9:00 a.m. Started around 10:00 a.m. Left for Bend and it took about 6 1/2 hours, but I made the trek.”

After walking 33 miles to work, he started his eight-hour shift. The local news station shared his story and it wasn’t long before people started emailing. They wanted to give him some type of help.

One individual who heard the story on his phone was on a tractor at the time. Chris Arsenault said: “We decided we have more cars than we need, so we wanted to give him this little Honda.”

Akers was amazed when Chris just handed over the paperwork and told him it was now his car. He said: “The kindness and generosity of the community has been overwhelming.”
