No other movie quite defines the late 1990s quite like The Matrix. When it hit theaters in 1999, it became an instant classic and skyrocketed Keanu Reeves to international fame.

The movie’s plot discussed what it is like living in a simulation. Since its debut, it has become a classic part of pop culture, often being quoted and referenced in other movies, TV shows, and media. However, its star, Keanu Reeves, shared with The Verge that the once-revolutionary plot has become rather pedestrian to the younger generations.

With the new Matrix Resurrections coming out December 22, Reeves, alongside his costar, Carrie-Anne Moss, sat down to interview with The Verge. In the interview, Reeves explains the entire plot of the original film to a trio of teens.

As seen in the clip, they’re not that impressed by Reeves explaining, “Well there’s this guy who’s in a kind of virtual world. And he finds out that there’s a real world, and he’s really questioning what’s real and what’s not real. And he really wants to know what’s real.”

It was an entire plot concept that was novel and shocking to the audiences of 1999, but apparently, it’s no longer such a surprising idea to the kids of today. As Reeves shared the way one of the girls responded, saying, “And the young girl was like, ‘Why?’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And she was like, ‘Who cares if it’s real?'”

Oh, how things have changed. In fact, the idea of reality being some kind of altered construct or simulation has actually been an occasional scientific debate since the movie first premiered.
