Farming dog meat is currently illegal in South Korea, but people continue to illegally participate in stealing, raising, or otherwise obtaining dogs to kill for food.

While most South Koreans disagree with the practice of eating dog meat, a small group consumes it as part of a traditional diet.

While we’d hope that the trend is dying out, there are still plenty of dogs suffering every day to supply the dog meat industry with new stores. Just last summer, the Humane Society International rescued over 100 dogs alone from Jindo Island in South Korea!

The dogs were confiscated from the meat trade before it was too late, and they were all transferred into the care of the Humane Society of the United States.

Rescuers could tell the dogs weren’t well cared for before arriving to them. But now, they’ll get all of their needs met while they wait to find forever homes!

As one of the rescue workers explained in the video below, the dogs are currently receiving daily cleanings, proper nutrition, socialization, and regular enrichment activities.

They’re going the extra mile to give the dogs everything they need and want, which is so much more than the pups were receiving prior to being rescued.
