There are many things that we may appreciate about staying at a hotel. It’s nice knowing that we will not have to clean up after ourselves in the simplicity of a hotel room is often very welcoming.

Something else that we may enjoy about staying at a hotel is ordering room service. If that is something you enjoy, you will want to pay particular attention to what happened to this family.

It seems as if the family had lost $6000 due to a very common room service scam. It is one that many people have not heard of, which is alarming because it allegedly happens so frequently.

The scam was posted on TikTok to the 1.8 million followers of Ali Koca. He said: “You need to be careful about this dangerous food service scam in hotels. This family was staying in a hotel, and they decided to order room service using the father’s debit card.”

The story comes out of Toronto, and it happened at an undisclosed location and hotel chain. What happened, however, could happen at almost any location.

After receiving a flyer about the room service in the hotel, the guests called and the food was ordered. They used the father’s debit card to pay for the order, and then sat back and waited for it to arrive.

After the order hadn’t come for over an hour and a half, they called the front desk and were informed that an order had never been made from the room.

The man panicked and checked his bank account, discovering that over $6000 had already been withdrawn.

It seems as if he had called the number from a flyer that was slid under the door at his hotel. The food on the menu was legitimate, but the phone number wasn’t.

As it turns out, this is a relatively common scam, where a fake room service menu is slipped under the door and once you use your debit card info to pay for the food, they log into your account and take as much money as they can.

Just remember, be cautious when you call any number to order food from a hotel. For the most part, ordering room service would simply put the charge on your hotel bill and you will rarely be asked for a debit card.

He summed things up by saying: “The best way to combat this scam is to call the front desk before you order your food, and ask them to confirm that the menu you’re ordering from is the right one.”
