Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

When Sidewalk Specials was doing their outreach program in De Doorns, South Africa, they often come across dogs in need of love, care, and medical attention.

Sometimes, the dogs of the village are too far gone and the kindest option is euthanasia. Other times, though, there’s a glimmer of hope for the pups and they just need the proper treatment and care to live their best lives.

On one outreach, they asked the local kids to find “sad” dogs in the area and bring them out. Sidewalk Specials is known for giving out medication, food, and pet education, so owners are usually willing to cooperate.

The children ended up finding a few “sad” dogs in need of some help, and among them was a sad pup named Gigi. Gigi was dragged from her home with an old handbag strap for a leash. It appeared as if she was almost giving up on life and her owners said they didn’t want her anymore.

After a quick assessment, the rescue team knew Gigi needed medical attention and rushed her to a vet in Cape Town. Once there, it was determined the poor dog was suffering from a fractured pelvis, mange, and tick bite fever.

She had a long road to recovery ahead, but she slowly made physical progress. Her spirits were broken, but being surrounded by people who loved her seemed to help. Eventually, she was ready for her forever home and she found an awesome family with another dog Gigi could play with!

Now, Gigi is hardly recognizable. She gets tons of attention, plays fetch, loves zoomies, and has a wonderful home with her new mom.
