As many are aware, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been recalling frozen shrimp because of the risk of Salmonella. This has affected many national chain stores, including Whole Foods and Target.

Avanti Frozen Foods has been the focus of this recall, and the frozen shrimp includes those that are cooked, peeled, and deveined. The packages are from between November 2020 and May 2021.

According to the updated recall: “This recall expansion has been initiated out of an abundance of precaution and will cover a large amount of product that has not been associated with any illness but been undertaken following discussions with FDA and CDC and reflects Avanti’s commitment to Public health and safety.”

The 365 line of products from Whole Foods are included in the brands been recalled. Food Lion and Meijer are also being included.

There may have been some Target locations in California that sold contaminated shrimp at the Mai Sushi locations found inside their stores.

It was back in June that the FDA first issued the recall for Avanti shrimp products. Six people had already become ill after eating the frozen products between December 2020 and February 2021.

August saw an increase in the number of people who have contracted Salmonella, including nine people from Nevada, Arizona, Rhode Island, and Michigan. Three of those people have been hospitalized.

Although not everybody who eats the shrimp will be hospitalized, the FDA does warn that infection could result in the organism entering the bloodstream and producing arterial infections, arthritis, and endocarditis.
