Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

When the weather starts to get cooler outside and the leaves change, we know that it is almost time for Halloween. It is the holiday that many people appreciate, not because they get a day off work (which doesn’t happen) but because they get to eat some yummy candy.

If you haven’t noticed yet, Halloween candy has been lining the shelves of your favorite store for over a month now. They know that you will pick up a bag or two and will have to come back for more because it never lasts until October 31.

In recent years, people haven’t been going into the stores to do their shopping quite as much. They choose to do Instacart for their groceries, both for safety and convenience.

As a result of those online orders, some interesting data has come to light. One of those has to do with the favorite candies in the United States from one state to the next.

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that 80% of the candy sold in 2021 was a type of chocolate. This included: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Peanut M&M’s, M&M’s, Snickers, and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate. Those candies were at the top of the list.

If you look at the map provided by Instacart, you see that most Western states preferred Peanut M&Ms but on the east coast, almost everyone loved Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Two standouts included Wyoming, which preferred Reeces, and New Hampshire, which loved M&Ms.

Most of the country had an appreciation for Twizzlers. If you lived on the West Coast and through the Pacific Northwest, you probably enjoy Red Vines instead.

Chocolate-covered candies were also considered. Most states, particularly in the north and midwest preferred Milk Duds. On the other hand, the South East, Texas, California, and a few other states would rather have Whoppers.

One other interesting comparison is in the lollypop category. The Midwestern states, a few states in the southeast, and a few in the northeast preferred Charms Blow Pops. The Western US and a strip from Vermont through to Alabama would rather have Dum-Dums.

So, what candy is your favorite?
