When you think of iced cookies, you immediately think of those fussy royal iced Christmas cookies. However, this channel takes cookies and cookie decorating outside your typical holiday season.

These simple thick chocolate cookies look benign, but as the video progresses you see the beauty unfold.

The color scheme of the cookie icing is elegant and sophisticated, matching the rich hues of the Victorian-era period (called the Gilded Age in the U.S.). Golden mustard, pewter blue, and royal purple create a complex and eye-catching treat that looks like it should be on someone’s vanity.

Similar to painting a picture, royal icing is applied to the cookies in layers. Like a lot of layers! For the sides, a mixture of glitter and royal icing is stenciled and pressed onto the dried blue layer. With fine tiny brushes, details are swirled onto the top portion with a thicker, less wet royal icing. What’s even more? All of this is applied with the smallest smears of royal icing. It’s like tightrope walking, but with cookies, everything is a fine delicate balance. The patience taken to wait and layer the designs onto the cookies is just as miraculous to see as the result.

Making a lid out of cookies is feasible but not as pretty as some other options. To get a see-through appearance a sweet material is used — poured sugar. A clear mixture of liquid sugar is poured into the cookie, creating a see-through lid — further creating a realistic feel to the box.

Assembling the whole box is a delicate matter. The base cookie is already glued together, but the thin ornate panels need a deft steady hand, or else you might crack them.

The butterfly on the lid is a finishing touch — balancing the appearance and popping the box with a lush and deep color. Watching the whole video, you’ll be both in awe and at ease, worrying that at any moment that all of the hard work can break. But when you see the result, you’ll wish you had an edible and inedible form of this jewelry box!
