The average home that you are familiar with will usually have a certain look to it. Sharp corners, straight lines, and a boxy appearance overall are common traits for most homes to have.
However, the average home can be rather wasteful. It can also be difficult to rely on the city for all of your basic utility needs. That’s where this new style of home comes into play.
These buildings are called “Earthships” and you will have to forget everything that you ever thought you knew about home construction. They are game-changing dwellings, to say the least.
As you might have expected, these homes are different when it comes to their appearance, as well as their functionality. According to a video shared by Living Big In A Tiny House, the home’s name is also inspired by the Michael Reynolds book about it.
Zoe and Martin took the inspiration that Reynolds provided and created their own Earthship. According to the video, it was approved by the Australian council, in case anyone was curious.
The structure that they ended up with is actually a take on a Reynolds design, entitled The Simple Survival Model Earthship. Since the couple already has a home on this property, they are using this one as a bed and breakfast.
Bryce Langston was given the chance to speak with Zoe and Martin. He wanted to know why these homes are considered to be so special and he got immediate answers. “An Earthship is an off-the-grid building made out of natural and recycled materials. It’s a bit like a spaceship or a sailing boat that has to be all self-sufficient, doing everything for itself, whether it’s power, water and sewage. It’s also called an Earthship because it uses a lot of earth in its construction, “said Martin.
The “ship” aspect of the name refers to the fact that you need to know how to navigate the building. You have to know when to open the windows and when to close them. Otherwise, it is very difficult to control the temperature inside. Once the audience is taken through the entryway to the home, they are given the chance to check out the greenhouse.
Bryce says that this is “like having a forest in your living room.”
