Charcuterie boards are a craze that is not going anywhere anytime soon. They are a staple at many restaurants and gatherings, for good reason.

Now, there is a brand new twist on the snack and we cannot wait to share it with you. These butter boards are actually based on French cooking traditions, which absolutely blew our minds to learn about. If the concept of a butter board seems very decadent to you, that is because it is. Instead of using meat and cheese like the charcuterie board, these boards rely on butter.

Once the butter has been spread, a vast plethora of additional ingredients is added. Jon-Paul Hutchins, corporate chef at ShiftPixyLabs in Phoenix, stepped up to provide a better explanation.

“All a butter board is, is this just deconstructed compound butter,” said Hutchins, in a recent interview with The Guest List. This TV show provides further insight on a wide range of pop culture topics. “And a compound butter is just plain butter with anything added to it. This is a French technique that’s been around for like 200 years,” Hutchins continued.

The beauty of these boards is that they can be as simple or as complicated as you prefer. They can be sweet or savory, depending on your personal taste.

Best of all, they do not require any sort of advanced cooking skills. All you need is a board and some softened butter. Cheese boards, wooden cutting boards, marble boards, slate boards, the options are endless. Parchment paper is also recommended, as a means of making cleaning easier.

To add color and flavor to the board, additional ingredients are needed. Parsley, chives, tarragon, and chervil are among the ingredients Hutchins uses to top their roasted garlic butter board. “Super bright tasting,” he says. “I got a little crunch from the pomegranates, so there’s some texture in there.”
