It doesn’t matter if you are a Star Wars kid of the 70s or if you just started watching it a few years ago, there is one part of the movie that always captures our attention. I’m talking about the lightsaber, and most of us have dreamed about carrying one and having a “real” lightsaber.
It seems as if Disney has been thinking the same thing, so on Star Wars day, May 4, they gave us a look at the new lightsaber they created.
A new Star Wars-themed hotel, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is due to launch in 2022, and a short video was released to help capture our attention. It did a good job because somebody who looked like Rey from the movie was holding a lightsaber with a blue blade. Not only does have the look of a real lightsaber, but it also has the sound to go along with it.
It seems as if some of the first to experience the new lightsaber for themselves will be those who are part of an immersive adventure on the Star Wars: Galactic StarCruiser. A Disney blog post talked about watching the lightsaber activate as you are watching and how you will be immersed in the Star Wars experience from the moment you step onto the scene.
Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development is responsible for creating the new lightsaber. A virtual media event was held, in which a number of reporters were on hand to see the lightsaber for themselves. In the words of Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro, “it’s real.”
As you can imagine, there are a lot of questions about how the lightsaber works. The video that they shared showed that it is real, but they haven’t exactly revealed how the lightsaber works. There is plenty of speculation, however, including the real possibility that it is an effect that gives you the feel of the lightsaber.
Then again, there are also some people who are asking if they will be able to buy a lightsaber or if it is only a prop used for Disney marketing. Those who happen to be on hand for the first Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser event will be able to handle the lightsaber and use it for some remote training, but they also may be given the opportunity to buy one of the lightsabers.
That again, it may be one of the lightsaber’s that is already sold by Disney. We’ll just have to wait and see.
