Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

Living off the grid is a fantasy that a lot of us have but it seems really hard to pull off. That’s why we are always drawn to stories like these, where people are actually to make this common dream come true.

The couple that you are about to meet was able to live off the grid for 14 years and their story is an amazing one.

Joel and Stephanie are now sharing their story with the good folks over at Exploring Alternatives. They constructed a home out of a wide range of materials that were derived from different sources and have not looked back since.

As they have grown more accustomed to their new living situation, they have managed to improve upon their domicile. Humans will always figure out a way to adapt.

“They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there,” the description shares.

They really make it sound easy, don’t they? From there, they learned that they would be able to grow their own food as well. They use a community garden to feed themselves and the home that they have constructed is large enough to house themselves, in addition to their two kids. They have thought of everything, haven’t they?

“The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that’s split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There’s also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights),” the description continues.

Sounds pretty awesome to us! The couple even has their own AirBnB that is also off the grid and it can be rented by the night. “Get away from the hustle at our off-grid oasis. A unique structure with a living roof. You can pick your own veggies in our seasonal garden and cook outdoors with our authentic earth oven!” they share.
