If you are a big fan of Vienna sausage or other types of canned meat, you will want to pay attention to this announcement. It comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, who announced a recall of items produced between December 12, 2022, and January 13, 2023.
According to the announcement, damaged cans may have caused contamination by various pathogens. Some of the brands affected by the recall include Kroger, Goya, and Great Value.
The recall is occurring nationwide, with the government department urging people to check any cans of meat they recently purchased for the following lot number: P4247. If you have a can with the number printed on it, you should throw it away or return it for a refund.
Canned meat is typically purchased because it lasts a long time on the shelf. Due to the potential leaks in these cans, however, fluids could leak, and spoilage may be an issue.
In a statement, the USDA added: “The cans subject to recall may have been damaged in a manner that is not readily apparent to consumers, which may allow foodborne pathogens to enter the cans.”
So far, no illnesses have been reported that are associated with this recall. If you do eat contaminated meat, you may not experience symptoms until a few days after consuming it. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and headaches.
