Buttermilk

Buttermilk is used in all sorts of recipes from pancakes to biscuits and even fried chicken. However, it’s not necessarily a common household ingredient. If you find yourself in the mood for some buttermilk biscuits but don’t have the buttermilk on hand, try substituting 1 cup of buttermilk for 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice + enough milk to measure 1 cup. Let stand for 5 minutes and then add the mixture to your recipe. You can also replace one cup of buttermilk with 1 cup of plain yogurt.
