I have long been a French Onion Dip aficionado but I’ve always liked it one way and one way only — cool and creamy and made with a packet of French onion mix. (Specific brands only.) Friends, I didn’t know what I was missing. See, this French Onion Dip is baked and it’s a whole different level of delicious. Here, you caramelize your own onions (worth it), and mix all your flavors from your spice drawer yourself (easy), and the results are outstanding. They are hot, bubbly, sweet, creamy, and comforting results. Will I ever leave my good ol’ standard packet of French onion mix style dip behind? Never. But will I be turning to this for those special occasions when I need a leveled up version from now on? Absolutely.

What Ingredients Do You Need for Baked French Onion Dip?
Nothing here is complicated. You’ll need:
- First of all, onions. Two of them. Yellow. (You could use sweet for a different flavor profile.)
- Dairy: Butter, cream cheese, sour cream. (This is indulgent, okay?)
- Mayo. To round out the creaminess and indulgence.
- Swiss or Gruyere cheese. Not a lot, it’s not the star of the show.
- Onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper.
See? Not a long list.

How Do You Make Baked French Onion Dip?
Now, some people see the phrase ‘caramelize some onions’ and it strikes fear into their hearts. It need not be so. Yes, it takes a while and you can’t rush it. But since it’s happening over low heat, you also don’t need to stand over the stove and babysit it too much. You can multi-task. Do some other kitchen things. And it’s always, always worth it.

That’s where this starts, roughly chop some onions (because we don’t long strands for dip) and get them in a skillet with some butter. Over medium-low heat, let them get good and deep brown, stirring them just every few minutes or so. You can also pop a lid on them and turn down the heat — it keeps things from burning and even deepens the flavor a tad.

That’s the only tedious part, if you can even call it that! For the rest — stir together the cream cheese, mayo, and sour cream, add in half the cheese, those onions, and the seasoning and get it all in a baking dish. Top it with the rest of the cheese and get it into the oven.

In 20 minutes, you’re going to have a dip that your friends and family will absolutely rave over. (But I won’t blame you one bit if you make it just for yourself.)
