Making Mealtime Meaningful: Discover how we're giving back with the 12T Cares program →

The idea of letting someone on TikTok choose the name of your child might seem insane but that is exactly what is happening here.

For parents who are expecting, the process of coming up with a name for their child is insanely difficult. There’s so much pressure, right? You are coming up with a name that the child is going to carry around for the rest of their life.

If you choose wrong and the child gets teased, this is a stain that the parent has to wear for the rest of their life, too. Plus, we would like to think that we can come up with a name that truly fits our little one. With all that being said, Colleen Slagen, a consultant and owner of Naming Bebe, is here to try and make that task a bit easier for all families.

The baby naming consultation company started as a hobby but has since blossomed into a full-fledged business of its own.

According to Fox News Digital, Colleen said: “I have been baby name-obsessed my entire life.” This obsession began during childhood, as Colleen would browse through yearbooks and write down all sorts of names in her diary.

After giving birth to her second child in 2022, Slagen decided to start posting suggestions to a group for expecting mothers that she found on Facebook. “I actually started getting really good feedback — and consultations,” Colleen shares. From there, her baby name consultation company was born. “Names that go with” is a type of video that she makes, as she tries to assist parents in coming up with a name that pairs well with their other child’s moniker.

“I can’t use,” another category of video that she has come up with, is perfect for parents who have names that they cannot use. In some instances, they cannot use the name for family reasons. In others, they may not want to because the name is too popular already. Colleen believes that social media adds to these pressures, too.

“Now you see the names of all the people you follow on social media, so it’s made it even harder to feel like you’re choosing a unique name,” she reasons. “It’s people who have 20 asks on their wish list, and want it to be a name that starts with this [specific] letter and has this many syllables and these sounds,” Colleen continued.
