There are two types of people in this world, those who believe in UFOs and those who don’t. Regardless of which side of the fence you happen to be on, however, you have to admit that it would be pretty awesome if UFOs are real and you could sleep in one for the night!

As it turns out, that possibility is more real than most people realize. It isn’t necessarily an alien spacecraft, but Airbnb has made it possible for us to stay in a 520 square-foot “UFO,” known as the Area 55 Futuro house. If you are interested in staying for the night, you will have to travel to the Joshua Tree National Park in California. There may be others scattered throughout the United States but this one allows you to stay for a few nights.

Matti Suuronen is the Finnish architect behind the design, which happened back in 1968. UFOs were big news back then, and the architecture was so cutting edge and futuristic that it caught on, at least to a limited extent. There are about 80 of them scattered throughout other areas, including one in Russia that is occupied by skiers who visit the resort.

Hugh Hefner actually owned Area 55 before it became a cottage available on Airbnb. It was installed at the Playboy Club Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 1968, but eventually, it was converted into a small home for visiting glampers and opened for visitors in 2019. You can stay there for $218 a night but you better get on the list now, because spring 2022 is the first available booking.

Inside Area 55 you will find many things that make it even more interesting. This includes VHS copies of a variety of space movies, from the Star Wars trilogy to Alien. It is also decorated perfectly for visitors, although it has all of the amenities you would want for your stay in the desert.
