We’ve all been there: you go to juice your lemon or lime and it seems so hard and dry that there’s hardly any juice coming out. The reality is that unless it’s a very old fruit – we’re talking visibly old and shriveled here- you can probably still get a decent amount of juice from it. You just might need cajole the fruit a little bit and this is where some useful kitchen hacks come into play.

The most basic trick to coax a bit more juice from your lemon involves rolling it. Take your whole lemon and roll it on the table or countertop, pressing down hard. This loosens the both the juice and the fibers inside so that when you go to squeeze it more of the juice inside can be released.

If you’re using one of those handheld juice pressers like bartenders use then this next trick is for you. Depending on the lemon there can be a lot of rind standing in between you and that juice. Cut the pointy ends of your lemon off before halving them. Then stick them in the juicer and the top part will be able to come down further, giving you more juice. The bonus here is that it’s also easier on your hands!

The last trick involves a microwave, but we’re not actually cooking our citrus or anything. Watch the video below to find out how it’s done!
