Champagne and Diet Coke do not seem like the best pairing for a drink but Tom Hanks is here to change the game for all of us.

While Diet Coke is more of an everyday beverage than champagne, it is time to bring the celebration to a glass near you. Champagne does not have to remain the exclusive domain of celebrities who party their lives away in nightclubs.

We regular folks now have the chance to drink like our faves and we have Tom Hanks to thank for that. Hanks put audiences onto the drink during a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” He told the audience about one of his discoveries, which he is currently referring to as the “Diet Cokagne.”

Hanks does not consider himself to be a big drinker and will typically order a Diet Coke in social settings. One day, the actor had a truly inspired moment, asking the restaurant where he was celebrating if they could add a shot of champagne to his usual soft drink. The end result was a delightful cocktail that everyone at his table seemed to enjoy.

In order to make one of these bad boys, Hanks recommends filling your glass two-thirds of the way with Diet Coke before adding the champagne.

However, the presence of Diet Coke is not mandatory in these instances. You can swap it out for a different soda if need be. Hanks says that you can use any Coke product at your disposal.

When Hanks and Colbert made the drink on the show, they opted to use Veuve Cliquot. This is some pretty pricey champagne but do not fret, there are less expensive brands that will do the trick quite nicely. The mixture is a pleasing amber color and Colbert refers to the beverage as an “American Aperol Spritz.”

Colbert went on to call the cocktail “strangely, strikingly, shamefully good,” which makes a lot of sense to us. It’s one of those combinations that you would not expect to enjoy but once you have had the chance to try it out, we are willing to bet that you are going to like it.

What do you think? Would you try this combination for yourself? Let us know!
